The Start Of A Journey

My name is Oliver Blank, and I work in retail. I love watches, but as you might expect, my "Holy Grail" timepiece, the magnificent A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk, is a financial galaxy away from my reality.

But in the watch world, "value" isn't always measured in Swiss francs. Sometimes, the most compelling asset is the story.

I’ve done something like this before in a different hobby at a different time, but today, I’m setting the bar much higher. I'm calling it "God Tier to Holy Grail."

The God Tier

The Casio F-91W is the perfect starting point because it’s the most honest watch ever made. In a world of luxury and "members-only" waiting lists, this digital classic is the great equalizer. It’s a "God Tier" staple found in the collections of investors, inventors and humble workers alike. Its design hasn't changed because it doesn't need to. It offers exactly what you need and nothing you don’t.

By starting here, the experiment begins at the very foundation of timekeeping. It is a watch that is globally recognized and deeply respected by the same community that will, hopefully, eventually help me reach the Zeitwerk. It represents the "retail reality" of the everyday worker, making the climb toward the mechanical complexity of German watchmaking a true story of growth. Choosing the F-91W means starting with a legend that everyone knows, ensuring the first step of this journey is built on a piece of history that could belong to anyone.

The Holy Grail

If the Casio is the starting line, the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk is the ultimate goal. It is a mechanical masterpiece that does something almost no other watch can: it tells time digitally, but without a single battery or microchip. Instead of a screen, it uses heavy metal discs that mechanically snap into place every sixty seconds. It’s like a tiny, high-tech engine powered entirely by springs and gears.

To me, the Zeitwerk is the ultimate watch because it bridges the gap between the digital world I know and the world of high-end art. While the Casio is a legend for being simple and tough, the Zeitwerk is a legend for being impossibly complex. Every tiny part inside is polished and finished by hand, even the parts no one will ever see. Reaching this watch isn't just about owning something expensive; it’s about proving that a journey starting with a $20 resin watch can actually end with a piece of mechanical perfection.

One Casio, One Goal.

The concept is simple but audacious: I will trade watch-for-watch, moving strictly upward in value or craftsmanship, until I hold a Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk on my wrist. No cash can ever be included in the transaction. It must be a pure, one-to-one swap.

This isn’t just about owning a luxury item. It’s about documenting the journey, the conversations, the connections, and the shared passion of the watch community that (I hope!) will make this insane trade possible.

How You Can Be Part of the Story

This experiment fails without the community. I am officially announcing the project to find my very first trading partner.

The Current Offer: A brand-new, Casio F-91W, fresh from its (very small) packaging.

What I’m Looking For: A timepiece that represents the next step up from the F-91W. I don't know what that watch is yet. That's the exciting part. I'm looking for a fair trade that moves me one cog closer to the Zeitwerk.
